Do you prefer a walkable mixed-use or big lot suburban community?

Quote

The 2013 community preferences survey from the National Association of Realtors is an analysis on the types of communities people prefer to live in.  On one hand compact, walkable communities continue to have leaps in demand, but detached houses with large yards and lots of privacy are still tops.  You can read all about it in this 51 page slide show: http://www.realtor.org/sites/default/files/reports/2013/2013-community-preference-analysis-slides.pdf

WalkablecommunitiesSplitpieOne of the things I was surprised to see is the breakdown between a walkable, mixed-use community and a conventional suburban one to be very balanced.

Anyway, you should check out the slideshow…good stuff.

The End of the Hometown

Quote

When asked where’s your hometown, how do you respond: the one you were born in, or the one you grew up in?

Seeing as the median duration in a residence is only 5.2 years* most of us have moved multiple times since birth.  So people aren’t tied to one location in today’s mobile society and many are missing that connection to a town.

I would always respond that I was born in Lowell, MA but moved a couple times before Nashua…which is where I grew up.  I have a connection to both, but my hometown is Nashua.

So I ask the question in my next post: What is home?

It’s just something I’ve been thinking about, the loss of the hometown.

Character Filled Log Home

SOLD

Log Home on Brookline Rd in Mason, NH

Brookline Rd in Mason, NH

Never a doubt that a log home exudes character.  You either love them or they’re just not your style.  This log design is a milled D-shape with a butt and pass corner style.   This rural piece of real estate sold back in 2010, always loved it.

Log Home with Large Front Porch

Log Home with Large Front Porch- log homes should always have large overhangs and porches are one of the best ways to protect the exterior.  Water is not a friend to the log and you want it to project away from the house.

Memorial Day Garden Club Sale Locations

Quote

Grampy Gardening

Grampy Gardening

I’ve always called myself a Yankee Gardener. I use what’s in my yard and create around it, from rough stacked stone walls, shade gardens through the woods, to sunny plant beds on granite outcroppings.  The use of newspaper and cardboard for weed control is just common sense.  Most of my seeds and plants are from friends, family, or garden clubs.  I have plants in my garden from my grandfather, and the first items that moved to my home in Pelham were my plants!  I divide and share, which is what an annual garden club is all about.

Many New Hampshire garden clubs had their yearly sale last weekend and I missed them!  I’ve been trying to find a few for Memorial Day weekend to attend and I thought I would share:

2014 Empty Bowls Event in Nashua is tonight!

Quote

I cannot say enough how outstanding this is!  Number one, it’s the major fundraising event for the Nashua Soup Kitchen (http://www.nsks.org), and number two, the concept is brilliant!

Filling your free hand made bowl with soups prepared by local area restaurants, while listening to the Nashua High School Jazz Band, is just fun!

A row of beautiful hand crafted bowls you get to choose from.

Real Estate and GIS Maps for Southern NH Communities

Quote

It’s me again.  Don’t you just love researching real estate!  No?  Then you should call me to help you.  My email and phone are on this site somewhere.

So let me tell you about one of my favorite resources: Geographical Information Systems or GIS for short.  It basically a large data organizer that government (municipal, defense, intelligence), universities, health, and so many more use to easily visualize large quantities of data and their relationships.

For real estate/municipality purposes it takes different property maps such as a map for lot dimensions, zoning, water lines, conservation areas, and overlays them together for easy searching and viewing.

Find the municipality’s website and many will have an interactive GIS mapping system.

Here are a few municipal GIS mapping sites(make sure your pop-up blocker is off):

Nashua: http://www.gonashua.com and you need to click on “Go to GIS maps” and it will open up in another window.

Windham: http://www.windhamnewhampshire.com (check this out Jeff)

Manchester: http://208.82.76.123/pubgis/ (this one’s for you Dave)

The towns in the NRPC include: Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Lyndeborough, Mason, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Pelham, and Wilton.

Top 10 reasons why working from home is not productive for me:

Quote

Shaggy on Desk

Shaggy on Desk

Why don’t I get anything done when I work from home?

As I sit here emailing a new real estate listing to my favorite client, and trying to finish an appraisal report, my mind starts to wander into the many reasons why I’m not as productive working from home.  So I decide to write down my top 10.

1. I cannot see the top of my desk because of all the junk mail, statements, children’s school notes, and the occasional dog on the desk.

coffeebreak

2. Coffee breaks come every 15 minutes.

3. Dogs want to go out every hour.

4. The dishes in the sink are calling me…loudly (one just jumped to their death off the counter as the dog was licking it).

screaming.gif5. All the extra snack breaks.

6. The daydreaming that comes from being overwhelmed by the paperwork on my desk.

7. Once I wake up from the daydreaming I consider moving the wash into to the dryer.

8. Still considering it.

9. The inevitable delaying of the shower.  Then worrying I’ll have to go out on a moments notice.

10. FACEBOOK!

Real estate productivity at its finest…I need to get to the office.
